Depression Neurotransmitters

Depression neurotransmitters are chemicals that help us to "feel good" because they relay signals between a cells and nerves. When there is an inadequate connection between cells and nerves, depression can occur.

The three depression neurotransmitters that are responsible for mood regulation are serotonin, GABA, and Dopamine.

Depression Neurotransmitter #1: Serotonin

When we experience a serotonin deficiency, symptoms of depression can occur. Symptoms include: anger that is difficult to control; cravings for starchy foods develop; obsessive-compulsive thoughts appear; insomnia occurs; and other issues such as migraines, irritable bowel and fibromyalgia can develop. (serotonin deficiency can be a result of vitamin B12 deficiency, so read that section of this site to learn more about the connection between depression neurotransmitters and foods).

Depression Neurotransmitter #2: GABA

GABA deficiency symptoms are panic and anxiety disorders; cravings for alcohol; mood disorders; learning disabilities; increase in stress hormones; insomnia; in cases of severe deficiency, epilepsy can develop.

Depression Neurotransmitter #3: Dopamine

A dopamine deficiency can cause decreased motivation and drive, and long-term deficiency can lead to muscle tremors and Parkinson's disease.

Excessive dopamine can cause mental illness such as schizophrenia.

Supporting Depression Neurotransmitters Naturally

Eating a diet rich in whole foods, adequate fats, and including a rich source of vitamins A & D such as cod liver oil, goes a long way to nourish our neurological system. Raw milk provides adequate enzymes and good bacteria to support a healthy digestive tract, as well as provide the minerals to assimilate a diet rich in fat-soluble vitamins.

Aromatherapy for Depression Works by Supporting Depression Neurotransmitters

Therapeutic-grade essential oils detoxify and clear receptors that are responsible for the relay of depression neurotransmitters for increased well-being and balanced mood support.

How?

Essential oils, with their ability to quickly penetrate our dermal layer (skin) and cross cell barriers, can detoxify cells so that receptors are clear and better able to relay neurotransmitters.

They also allow our cells to be better able to accept nutrients so that we absorb vitamins and minerals from our food, futher supporting our well-being.
