Oral Contraception and B6

Many women take oral contraceptives -- how many are aware that it can deplete vitamin b6?

Studies done over the past 15 years from various countries reveal that oral contraceptives that deliver estrogen-progesterone hormones cause an excretion of tryptophan metabolites -- the amino acids that transform into b6 -- and other studies have shown a b6 deficiency in women taking oral contraceptives. (Therapy of Side Effects of Oral Contraceptives with B6,"Acta Vitaminol Enzymol," 1982)

If stopping oral contraceptives -- (scroll down to read about tryptopan-rich foods) is not an option, then supplementing with B6, or increasing foods that are rich in B6 is necessary when taking oral contraceptives.

Foods Rich in B6

Brown rice
liver
beef
whole wheat
rye
lentils
alfalfa
tuna
peas
bananas
cashews

blackstrap molasses
cabbage

Pesticides Act as Estrogens in the Body

Pesticides often act as endocrine disrupters, and can be found in a variety of cleaning products, in drinking water, and of course, in foods that aren't organic.

This is an important consideration regarding B6 assimilation, and one might want to consider supplementing with additional B6 foods -- or even better...

Go Organic!!
