PMS Natural Treatment
Aconversation about holistic treatment for depression wouldn't be complete without mention of PMS.
During the weeks before your period, symptoms of depression can intensify: increased tearfulness, irritability, anxiety, and insomnia, along with bloating, digestive issues, and water retention of PMS.
Most months I find PMS to be manageable, although sometimes I get a difficult month -- like this past month -- where I find myself lying awake at 1 a.m., staring at the ceiling, feeling restless and agitated. For middle-of-the-night sleeplessness, I find my essential oils to be indispensible. They seem to shake me out of an agitated state and provide immediate relaxation. I keep a bottle of Peace & Calming by my bedside for this reason.
Here's information on anxiety as part of a
PMS natural treatment
protocol.
Pay Extra Attention to Diet During this Time: Don't Forget the Cod Liver Oil
Taking cod liver oil (make sure it's the high-vitamin kind -- for a good source,
contact me)
is great for PMS, because the vitamin D is a precursor to ALL hormones, helping to balance them naturally. I take a full teaspoon at this time, which gives me almost 2,000 IUs of vitamin D, to help keep my hormones in balance. Remember, vitamin A works in synergy with vitamin D, and works to prevent any potential toxicity.

Ensure lots of good calcium by drinking extra milk
Calcium works in concert with vitamin D, and helps to relax muscles -- great for tension relief. The calcium in raw milk provides needed neurological support, and is crucial for the absorption of b-12 -- very important during this time.
Raw milk's mineral benefits over pasteurized:
9.7% more selenium;
66% more iron;
69.4% more zinc;
21% more calcium; (taken from Raw Milk and Raw Milk Products, Safety, Health, and Legal Issues, by Lee Dexter, Sally Fallon, 2007)
Take an Evening Primrose Supplement During the Weeks Before your Period
A common treatment for children with hyperactivity is evening primrose oil. Other studies have shown a connection between intake of Evening Primrose oil and eased symptoms of depression.
Ensure Adequate B-vitamin Intake
Include foods like raw milk, grass-fed meats, and organ meats like liver (liver pate is delicious, and satisfies even the most dedicated liver-hater! Find a source of organic livers in a specialty food store and splurge on this once a month) which are rich sources of nearly all vitamins -- beef liver is the most nutrient-dense food available!
It might also be helpful to take a B-complex at this time.
Come on Everybody, Do your Exercise!
Exercise increases oxygen to your bloodstream, and increases endorphins, all of which are calming, and balance mood.
Don't Forget to Focus on Spirituality
Practice meditation to soothe yourself during this time; take time to do the things that are important to you; try to keep the calendar a little more clear so that you don't have too much on your plate and become prone to irritability.
