What are Essential Oils?

Esssential oils are the remaining liquid when plants are steam distilled, carbon extracted, or pressed. They are made from leaves, stems, bushes, bark, and fruit skins.

Some flower petals contain too little essential oil to be extracted by steam distillation, and must be combined with hexane or ethyl alcohol in order to extract the volatile compound. The alcohol is then removed through another process, leaving behind what is known as an "absolute." Jasmine absolute is an example of this type of process.

Essential oils are volatile, which means that they evaporate quickly.

When processed via low-temperature steam distillation, essential oils maintain their enzymes and chemical constitution, and thereby have greater healing properties.

Citrus Fruits are Cold-Pressed

Citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and tangerines contain a large amount of essential oil in their skins. These oils are removed through a process called cold-pressing, which essentially presses the oil out of the skins.

Citrus oils, because they are more easily grown and more plentiful, are generally less expensive than other essential oils, like rose, which require more processing to produce.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a form of natural, or alternative medicine, in which essential oils are used to bring relief of a symptom, or to bring relaxation to the user.

It has been used throughout history, and there are biblical references to essential oil use.

Similar to herbology, aromatherapy harnesses the healing powers of plants, and consciously applies these powers to the human body.

It is a safe and very non-invasive method of natural healing.

Essential Oils Support the Body Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and Spiritually

While I believe that all essential oils affect the body spiritually, mentally and emotionally, and physically at all times, in certain situations I may require a more specific response.

For example, when I have a muscle injury, I might apply essential oils that contain a higher amount of anti-inflammatory compounds to reduce swelling and pain.

When I am meditating, sandlewood and frankincense, both of which cross the blood/brain barrier, are elevating to the spirit.

And I have my own protocol developed as a daily mood support, which is a combination of spiritual support, as well as mental and emotional.

Those who work with vibrational medicine state that the reason essential oils can effect a long-term change in the mental and physical states is that they work to raise our vibrational frequencies.

When are vibrational frequency is raised, we are less prone to disease on all levels. We are higher functioning, and more "in the flow" with the Universe.
